Sharks!

Guys look for a surf casting guide that will target sharks off island beach state park area. We rent a home right on the beach and the kids and I want to try it!

It's been a lot of years since I did it, but we had a place in SSP, and I had the permit for my truck for years. Fished IBSP regularly throughout the summer, and really enjoyed the sharking.

Best opportunities were once the water warmed up, which was usually late July or August. Also did way better after the sun went down, so getting out there and getting set up after dinner worked well for us. Didn't really seem to matter what tide it was, but the low light in the evening helped get them closer to the beach. Once the shadows of the dunes started covering the water, it was game on.

For bait, a big chunk of bunker was fine. My rigs evolved to using a short 9" to 12" wire leader. I'd buy the Berkley 45lb wire leaders and just unsnap the clip from the end, then loop on a 9/0 Gami circle hook. Push the loop on the wire leader through the eye of the hook, then pass the point and barb of the hook through the loop, it'll snug up nice on the leader. Tie about 4-5 feet of heavy mono, I used 40lb, onto the wire leader, and put your fishfinder slider on the mono. That keeps your sinker up close to the bait for better casting. Then tie the mono to a barrel swivel, and tie that to your braid. Before using that mono section, I'd lose fish to frayed and broken braid. I think it rubs on their back or gets hit by their tail when they are fighting, and the braid isn't as abrasion resistant as the mono. It's not that hard to cast from a 10" to 12" rod, and definitely makes a difference in catch rate.

Just rig up a big chunk of bunker, either a half or third, and get it out as far as you can with that rig. You'd be surprised how close the sharks swim to the beach, so don't sweat that you can't cast too far. They'll find it.

I used a baitrunner reel, and just snapped it shut while they're running with the bait. They fight like crazy, and you usually get a few every evening.

There may be better spots on the beach to fish, but we never found a bad spot, the sharks are always moving, so location didn't seem to be a very big deal.
