Wonder if the inflow is a trout hotspot?

Yeah, they really pulled the plug on Spruce Run. It appears to have dropped more than six feet in the last two weeks.

I don't know anything about how they engineer our municipal water supply, but looking at Spruce Run it would seem to me that it would be a lot more efficient if they just had a pipe running from the reservoir to the weir. It looks like they just dump the reservoir to make the entire South Branch higher and they catch a percentage of that water at the weir.

Taking water from spruce first is more cost effective than rvr. Dale recently educated me on this. No turbines to fire up at spruce I think like they have to on the valley.

Regardless, we need rain badly. And not concentrated mass volumes over just Union county.

Ok I'll admit it, I thought this was going to be a big fish haha.

Nice work Andy.

Water temps on the SB and main stem should be coming down with the cold water feed and flows should be up. Any trout that held over through this warm summer should be on the move!

We are gonna give it a few days to see if they actually go and grab that tire. If they don't, we will need some volunteers to move it approximately 100yds to a location where it can be taken away by truck.

Interesting that the water release was not into the south branch of rockaway creek but at the alternate at the south branch of the Raritan at Hamden pumping station. Its listed here on 8-19:

If you look at the actual numbers as listed in the WSA link you'll see the RVR release was only approx. 22cfs on the 18th and 15cfs on the 19th. In contrast the releases from SRR for those same dates were approx. 235cfs which is where the high flows on the SBR actually derived from. They've been releasing from SRR since about July 13 at varying rates depending on precip and natural flows. VERY little has been released from RVR so far this year. There actually have been a few instances when they've been pumping from the SBR up into RVR.

Just a short FYI for anyone who may be interested, as of earlier today they reduced the outflow from SRR by about 60cfs and began releasing from RVR at approx. 85cfs. This change should definitely result in cooler water temps below the pumping station. Give them a day to acclimate and you should be able to find feisty, willing holdovers to play with from there downstream for quite a distance.
