So what are some myths about fishing that you may have been told, or believed at one time, but found out to be untrue?

Here's one for me...I always believed that in the summer fish move into shallow water after sunset because the water has cooled.

Ever since I bought a fish finder with a temperature sensor I learned this is nonsense. If the water is 80 degrees in the afternoon it's usually still 80 degrees at midnight. If there are any changes it's usually no more than a single degree.

I once heard of a guy that caught a walleye in Monksville. I have proved him wrong many times over.

Saying you caught anything in monksville is like saying you saw a sasquatch. It could be true, but its probably not.....

Lol, dunno bout Monksville but the big P River holds walleye and trout. Fishin it yesterday and saw a LEGIT 3lb brown trout, juicy & in the brackish section. Got the lil eye just yesterday, the bigger of the two was in September!http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/Realdeal47/IMG273-1_zps45fdf1be.jpg (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/Realdeal47/media/IMG273-1_zps45fdf1be.jpg.html)http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/Realdeal47/image-1_zps2fb60a93.jpg (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/Realdeal47/media/image-1_zps2fb60a93.jpg.html)

Stinky bait for catfish. Yes it works but fresh cut bait works much better for big channels and live bait for flatheads

Any body bring bananas on their boat? I won't touch bananas any days I'm going fishing and definitely don't let them on my boat. Guy I bought my boat from never heard the ol banana myth till he packed one and ripped his lower unit off on a rock shoal 10 miles out on lake Erie. I don't believe it but I'm not out to disprove it either

That big fish only like big lures.

I generally believed that until I caught a 3 lb wiper and a 24 inch rainbow on a Yozuri Snap Bean, which is smaller than the nail on my pinkie.

I still generally fish big lures because I don't want to catch sunnies, perch or tiny bass but I've caught many a fish on lures almost as big, or bigger than the fish, so that doesn't work either.

Fishing is all luck. This is a MYTH. I honestly believe that if you plan everything just right, you will do well. Now there are many things that need to come together just right but if they do, its game on. For good days, certain things are a must before you venture out. Among them are:

- Saturdays are generally better than Sundays for obvious reasons not the least of which is if you fish on Sunday your fishing a place that was more than likely fished the day before.

- Cloudy skies better than sunny skies. Two reasons here. 1)Fish are more skitterish on sunny days and 2) sunny skies means high pressure = less active fish; cloudy means low pressure = more active fish. Same goes for shade vs sun. Shady good; sun bad.

- Rainfall day or night before. Rises on streams/rivers equals hungry/actively feeding fish. Rainfall also knocks down many weeds on lakes allowing for easier fishing. Rainfall also increases oxygen levels especially a heavy rain. More oxygen means more active fish.

If conditions above are met, more than likely you'll do well. "X" factor - as always - is any other anglers. This part is hardest to control and although it may seem like luck if you get a pond or section of river or stream to yourself, there are ways to lessen the chance someone else will be there. An example is the mighty Passaic which seems to be fished every day yet in 7 trips there this year, I've yet to see a yak or boot print. I go where and when others don't. This is not luck.

The bottom line is be smart and you can make your own 'luck'.

I've caught multiple 6-7lb Hybrids, True Strain Stripers and countless 20"-23" Largemouths on 2" swimbaits. Many times, they will outfish my 3" and 4" offerings.

Heard this one before and completely and utterly disagree. Bananas = fish and that's a fact.
BTW, I was told that every time you masturbate, God kills a kitten.

If you put suntan lotion on and use your hands to rub it in, the fish will smell it on your bait/lure and won't touch it.

This one I've found to be true...more for Saltwater but I'm superstitious in general so I won't do it for Freshwater.

USE THE SPRAY! Won't get on your hands.

I believe that one to be a myth. Read an article where fish would even go after lures dipped in oil, gasoline, and suntan lotion. Only thing that really repelled them were lures covered in bug spray............
