Yanmars have a great reputation but apparently there was an issue on these particular engines beacuse they were eating valves, especially if they were not propped correctly. Do a google search and you will see some information out there.

If I were you and was serious about the boat I would make my purchase pending an authorized Yanmar dealer like Mack Boring do 2 things:
- Run the serial numbers of the engine and see if this engine was in the serial number range of the problem engines and if so they should be able to tell you if the valves had been replaced.
- Have them do a complete survey of the engine to include an oil analysis and to make sure the engine is getting up to the rated RPM since a lot of issues were apparently caused by them being over propped and not being able to run up to full RPMs.
