Go and talk to Dave at the Reel Seat. Not only does he sell the right products, he fishes with them. If it's tilefish you're after, Dave is the man. Ask him about the Shimano Torium Reels.

Does anyone know how the avet 2 speed reels would handle the work load. Looking for a reel for cod / tilefish. Should mention that I am locked into Avet, received one for x mas and am looking to exchange the sx 5.3 for a larger 2 speed.

I have an MX, SX and a 2 speed HX.

The HX I have used for tuna to pollack. I beat the hell out of them all and they work great.

Heading up to Mass next week for pollack. We're supposed to be fishing 400'-600' depths.

Pick up this week's The Fisherman magazine, there is an article on this very topic! Unfortunately every reel mentioned is over the $400 mark, lol. But still a good read...

Look at the new accurate furry 4 to 1 gear ratio is a must. A little more money but a good buy

Never been deeper than 200-250 but my Diawa Saltist has been serving me well for the past 5+ years.
6.4:1 ratio and the level wind feature makes things easier in the cold temps never having to hand stack the line.
Off shore deep wreck all day with no complaints.

I have an Avet HXW raptor, the reel is not cheap, but I used it in 700' of water and the 2 speed is a must at the end of the day after soo many drops and reel ups my hands and arms were mush! If you can afford a good reel it's worth it as you can use it for tuna also! I have no regrets and the reel holds over 800 yards of 65# braid with a top shot!
