I like the Tsunami Trophy Series Travel Rods. Inexpensive ($50-$80).

Okuma makes them as well but you will pay double the price.

i brought gear to Jamaica 2x. I was in Negril both times.

I hired a guy in a skiff that usually brings people snorkling.

He would pick me up daily at sunrise and we'd fish until about 10-11. I think I gave him 25-50????? I don't really remember but it wasn't much.

We trolled and achored to bottom fish - real low tech!!

Holding the rod while trolling, looking in the water with a snorkel while anchoring!!!

We caught a bit of everything - spanish macks, kings, pompano near the beach... a black fin
grunts, grouper, snapper.....

Negril has a large reef area

Good times.

I bring rods everywhere I go. I have a 3-piece Penn that they don't make anymore and two St. Croix Tidemaster travel rods, one spinning and one casting. If you have the money to burn, they are awesome. I fought what was probably a 50 pound tarpon on the medium action spinning rod with 20-pound braid and a 50-pound fluoro leader for 10 minutes until he spit the hook on what was probably his last jump. I'm assuming surf fishing in Jamaica is similar to other places in the Carribean where you don't have big breakers and can get away with a 7-foot rod, but St. Croix also has Triumph Surf Travel rods. They cost a few more bucks, but they have a better warranty and are better rods. Good luck.
