Default Egg sinkers vs. fish finder

I've always used a fishfinder when clamming for stripers. But watching the sinker go one way and the bait going the other is a drag. I'm thinking of switching to egg sinkers to get longer and more accurate casts. The only downside I can see is not being able to switch sinker weights easily. But so what? If the line is running through the sinker, you might as well just go heavier to begin with.

Anyone with any thoughts about this?

Egg sinkers fray the line.If you want a longer cast shorten up your leader.Once the rig hits the bottom you can let another 18'' out and you have a longer leader.Like you said to change your weight is a pain.Stick with the fish finder rig but use a 18'' leader and no more.Good luck this spring!!

A fish finder rig is just what it implies. It allows you to adjust your bait to the dept that you want. If you use an egg your bait will be at a fixed dept.

Egg sinkers fray your line.. and does not work the same as the fish finder rig.. To ensure your longer and better cast shorten up your leader then once you have reached the bottom u can let some line out..

Thumbs up Re: Egg sinkers vs. fish finder

I use egg sinkers on some bottom fishing rigs never had a problem with fraying. I use a bead between the egg and swivel to keep it from sliding and crushing the knot.
As stated you can shorten your leader for better cast control then just put it in free spool CLICKER ON if anchored.

When you say 18'' leader are you referring to the hook and leader or an 18'' top shot then hook and leader? Thanks

The leader would be the line between the swivel and hook

I use both but I prefer the fishfinder rig better, and it makes traveling with the poles easier when I remove the sinker and throw the rod on my car rack.

Fish finders or 3 ways for bottom fishing.
Eggs for faster/depth control when chunking.
