Default Blackfish jig ????????

For years i have made my jigs in colors matching the crabs im fishing, to have them blend in.
Last batch I made bright colors like the origional tidal tales from over 10 years ago.
Seems on a slow bite the bright colors draw t h e fishes curiosity more , drawing a few more bites.

What colors have others found to work best for them ?????

I've not really paid attention but come to think of it, I did notice one day I had a plain dark green jig on and it seemed to get more action. After I lost it I put other colors on and it they didn't seem to get as much attention....

What I have noticed is these fish seems to be attracted to slight movements of the jig and that often times triggers bites....Check out the Skinner video below. He's filming with just the camera and no bait.... Each time he drops it down the fish come to it and it's just a black piece of plastic... Maybe darker colors work better??

Also thinking that the conventional wisdom of keeping your bait as still as possible might not make as much of a difference as we all thought..

I'll be following this post to see what others experiences are.

I can see it now.... Everyone is going to be bouncing their sinkers around

I know some purists who would give you the stink eye if you dared to do that fishing next to them

don't think i ever noticed a difference in jig colors but it'd make sense. I can see still vs movement making a difference too. you have so much more control with the jig than the bait rig. As long as the current isn't pulling the jig out of my control, i'm using it every time over a bait rig.

They just want the crab so whether it's on a jig or bait rig i don't see the difference honestly. If it appears the bait rig is out fishing the jig I would bet it's from other issues (angler skill, movement/stillness, color, etc.) You have options and control with the jig...bait rig not as much.

Nice work Dan.... I know it varies with the conditions, but what weights do you find yourself using most of the time?

Im fishing jigs even in deeper water than many guys do. So find im fish 1.5 and 2 oz the most.
I scaled back the hook size on each by one size from what is called for
So far seems most fish have no issue with getting them in their mouth

Color like any other fishery can matter on a given day , however I don't have enough expierance on the jigs to make any flat out statements on which is better .
I know for sure jig weight and feel is important so u can detect a nibble or pick up or both . Fast taper medium power rods are my preference for using jigs , my best colors to date dark or plain heads .
However with limited expierance on jigs this could all change quickly . How u rig the jigs & fish them can improve ones success considerably.
In this fishery correct rod choice can be very important as jig color n baiting techniques .

Agreed. Probably the most important piece of the whole method is a lightweight sensitive rod and braid.
