Yea, I see what you're saying with the centralization. Like I said i got the Raymarine E120 system so everything would be integrated (I'm a 23 year old kid that grew up in the computer age so go figure), but I think bringing a handheld GPS is a good idea, just in case. I also have a compass, but I wouldn't know how to use it besides to head west to reach land, and a father that knows all the old school navigation techniques. Fortunately for me, I installed all of my electronics, individually fused each one on a fuse box, and isolated the power system from the boat's other systems, so if everything does go out, I know where to go to troubleshoot.

The point I was trying to make with the comment about network cables being the future is that all connectivity electronics are following computers. Wireless is probably a ways off for marine applications, but even a wireless router for computers uses network cables. If I get the digital radar which uses network cable for data transmission, it will last me further into the future than the analog cable for the analog radar.

Got off topic there for a bit.

I am not well versed in radar installs myself since I do not use it, but I will say get the newest technology that you can afford no matter what it is (as long as it is proven reliable).
