MXL to sxj for all my inshore fishing, easy to service, MXL for stripers, blues.
Loaded the MXL this past striper season with 30lb mono and caught some nice blues and striped ones on the Cock Robin

The MXL will be fine but I think a bit over kill for Fluke. Picked up an SXJ with cast control over the winter... Great little work horse of a reel. Very light and casts like a dream so I plan on using it for bucktailing, jigging, casting and drifting for inshore stuff and shallow water Blackfishing when not much weight is needed.

I use the MXL for live lining Stripers and have it on a heavier pole. It's a lot heavier than the SXJ so a bit harder and more clumbsy to handle and cast all day. It's a 2 speed so great for deep drops too.

Anything over SX size is way overkill for fluke IMO.

I picked up an sxj over the winter and can't wait to use it for fluke.

If you need a true do it all for bass, blues, fluke, etc I would go with an SX. It can hold 300 yrds of 40 lb braid

Yep SX is good for anything you will tangle with inshore.... I know guys down in Cape May who have even caught some large Black Drum on them.

Bought an SXj last year and found it able to handle everything I caught. Didn't have and true doormats but I don't expect to be able to blame the reel if I ever do hook up and drop it! Used an SX before that , found the Mx to be just a little to big to be bucktailing with all day.

I have an MXL/MC and an SX. I think the only reason to get an MXL over an SX is for line capacity if you are going to fish mono, and even then it is a consideration only for stuff bigger than fluke. If I were in the market for an Avet fluker, I would jump on the SXJ single speed, and fill it with 30 lb braid. Mono? Go with the SX. I would also pass on the magnetic cast control. Instead send your thumb to college.

I have an MXL, SX, and SXJ.. The SX and SXJ are prefect for fluke.. The SXJ is my new go to reel for fluke since it is so light and small.. Great little reel.. I use my MXL for Bass and Blues and deep drops..

If you are just dropping down, OK. If you are pitching, flipping from a PB or especially casting with any conventional you should/could need cast control. I wont buy a reel without it. I do a lot of casting with conventional, even surf fishing, and I don't care how smart you think your thumb is. When your thumb gets stupid, and you get a bad backlash with braid, your screwed. Just saying, especially if you cast at all.

Agreed Fishfish. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer and in the middle of a blitz of breaking fish I'll loose my mind and thumb control in the excitement. Now I'm out of the game digging at a birds nest at worst possible time. Cast control makes casting almost a no brainier.
