If you and your son can nail them on the NB you should definitely try the main stem. It's a better float as there is less skinny water you need to hassle through your canoe. I think the last time we floated the main stem we didnt have to get out once for shallow water.

My Old Town squareback is heavy. It will take a 4 hsp outboard. Stably built of course, but I don't think I need that on a river unless it's the Delaware, not that I wouldn't use it on the Raritan, if I didn't see the float as going from a point upstream to down.
