Chasing River Monsters
A friend of mine want to catch his first pike and to make it more challenging he wanted to catch it on a fly he tied. We loaded up the kayaks and hit the river. The river was very very low, we need rain bad. We had a slow start and we ended up switching from our fly rods to spin gear. My friend hooked up but lost the pike at the side of his kayak. We then caught a few pickerel and yellow perch. Then it happened, my friend hooked and landed his first pike. I then followed that up with a 24", 16" and a nice 30".
Next time we will get it on the fly! |

Re: Chasing River Monsters
Big streamers with lots of movement. Depending upon flow and level sometimes I use weighted streamers and other times unweighted. Strip-Strip-Pause. Fish it all the way back, I've had some follow and hit at the last second.

Re: Chasing River Monsters
Also remember you need to strip set and not trout set. That was hard to get used to.
I want to get one on a top water fly |

Cool catching man! Congrats on getting your homie his first Pike. They sure are an addictive species to chase! Beautiful fish and awesome pic of the guy in the water.
