Default Outboard stalling out!

Tried taking my boat out to lake hopatcong and couldn't even make it 1 inch from the dock. I turn the key and it starts sometimes but stalls out about 5 seconds later even with the idle speed up it stalls out. We checked the filter and made sure gas is getting through with pushing the ball. Plus after an hour I drove all the way back home and checked the spark plugs and they had gas on them so my dad said the gas is going through. Any help will be great guys so I can take her out for a spin! I was so pissed that this is happening and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to get it fixed.

Mike

Did you test the spark? Test against the cylinder head or if you don't mind the tingle stick a screw driver in the Wire and crank away! (kidding on the screw driver method) If yes and good and strong move to fuel quality.

Lawn mower was doing the same thing. Fuel was loaded with water. Look in your gas can with a flash light. If you see what appears to be a clear bubble type mass in the bottom its water. Another problem could be a clogged jet or orifice in the carb.

Good luck!

Brand, year and horsepower of engine would help here.

You could try some fresh gas with a can of seafoam additive.Itll clean out the carbs.Worked for a freind of mine.

If you are not using an additive like Startron to your fuel I would bet Carb needs to be cleaned out. Ethanol BLOWS! I had the same exact problem...

As mentioned above, pull a spark plug out of the engine crank the engine and see if your getting spark. If you are then it's likely a fuel problem. If the boat has been sitting a while try running the engine off an auxiliary tank and if that works you will know if it's a fuel or fuel line issue.
