The way it was explained to me was...

A hoagie is made on a submarine roll. Oil, oregano, lettuce, Provolone cheese, Cotto salami, tomatoes, and raw onions.

A zep is the same sandwich, but on a Kaiser roll, and no lettuce.

I grew up with subs, now I live amongst the hoagies. Anyway, a "regular" sub was ham, salami and provolone, with lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and oregano. Hot peppers optional. And, the best ones by far came from Tastee Sub Shop ("Crazy Andy's") in Sayreville.

Some places just number them with a description of what is on each number and offer extras like hot peppers or mayo. Some places name them. It all depends on where you get them...Charlie

This, with Slater's instead of tastee sub, which really went downhill in recent years imo

Absolutely! Nothing like all the grease and the warm wilted lettuce to cure a hangover. Sounds terrible unless you've had one...
