Default Trailer reg question

I recently bought a boat from a guy down in south jersey. The trailer did not come with plates so I obviously need to get them. I have a title for the boat. What is the process? Do I take my title into the MVC office and that's it or do I need other paperwork? Thanks in advance.

Title for the boat won't do anything for you when trying to register the trailer. You need a copy of the last trailer registration and a notarized bill of sale from the previous owner in order to register the trailer in your name.

True dat. The boat paperwork has nothing to do with the trailer. Funny thing after sold, the seller usually wont give you the time of day. Hope you're not "most".

The onus on trailer registration is on to prove you and the guy who sold it to you did not steal it.

Did he ever register it? Get that expired registration with a notarized bill of sale to prove at least he owned it and he sold it to you.

Also get a separate price for trailer, motor and boat. Registration is sales tax on boat, not motor or trailer.

In NJ, you can get a registration for a home made trailer. Get lots of receipts for material from a builders supply store, go buy some trailer lights at a trailer store.

Then type up a letter stating you built it your self at a cost of $500.
Have letter notarized, then go to a DMV near the shore (water) to get the NJ paperwork. (I like Salem County, they see lots of boaters there.)
