jeez...that place can get nasty quick...it's as bad as rvr if you ask me. if the wind comes in at the right direction it's literally a wind funnel.

I was behind the island fishing and we didn't realize the wind picked up BAD because the island was totally blocking it. when we went to leave as soon as we came around the island we were hit with 40mph winds and probably 3ft waves with caps. (and yes we put our life jackets on) our max speed with the trolling motor and paddles was about 1.5mph down from about 4mph and we took about a quarter gallon of water on every time we got hit. I had to bail out with a bottle the whole time.

to make a long story short when we finally got back to the rocks and kissed the land there was a guy launching his kayak to go fishing!!! we go "dude you can't go out there we almost didn't make it back..." he went anyway.

I'd bet this happened friday, that wind was bad. i went to go fishing and didn't even launch when i saw the water.

they only good that can come of this is if people take these stories as a serious warning...be careful

Almost regardless of the rest of the day about 1:00 or so it seems the wind decides to blow at 15 to 25 straight from the south. Since the “launch” is almost as far south as you can get good luck if you’re north of the island. It usually calms down after an hour or so.

.

Actually two boaters died in the last week on the Delaware River.

39-year old Cheeyen Yap drowned at the Delaware Water Gap just downstream from the Rt. 80 bridge. His body has yet to be recovered.

Another man fell out of a 16-foot boat and drowned in South Jersey. His body was eventually found in Beverly Township. As far as I can find, his name has not been released.

A third body was found near Christopher Columbus Blvd and Reed Street in Philadelphia, but the police don't think it was a boater.

They recovered the body of the kayaker in Split Rock Reservoir Friday.
His name was Michael Vecchiarella, 55, of Totowa.

Here is his obituary:

I haven't heard anything about Cheeyen Yap. He may still be in the river.
