Lightbulb Re: Channel catfish stocking:

On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, CPO Driscoll assisted the Central Region Officers by responding to an illegal fishing complaint along the Raritan River, in New Brunswick, Middlesex County. Upon arrival, CPO Driscoll surveilled two fishermen callously using cast nets and keeping every fish they caught. CPO Driscoll apprehended the two fishermen in possession of eleven black crappie over the daily limit, eighteen black crappie under legal minimum size, five largemouth bass under legal minimum size, and one chain pickerel under legal minimum size.
Who said the birds were eating all the fish ?

I believe it is to supplement limited LMB reproduction in the lower tidal freshwater portion of the river.

Ask at the FW Forum.

also note for stocking lmb, bodies of water are different per year. Look at the yearly pdfs for the stocking summaries https://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/fish_lm_bass.htm

I dont see the delaware river listed recently, but according to the 2019 digest guess this year it will receive a stocking. (or it did in 2018 )

It's a good idea to stock lmb, and other warmwater fish like channel cats, all over the state. Better to stock as many small ponds as possible rather than keep stocking the same every year.

Why not ?.. the river has plenty of forage, habitat is not ideal, better suited to SMB, but LMB do well in rocky streams too , I have seen some nice one's caught in SMB type water. However don't seem to reproduce as well as SMB do in rocky rivers, probably why they need to be stocked.. they won't push the SMB out, and they will simply be relegated to a secondary fishery, and wind up in slower moving more weedy areas, and as has been previously been stated, they will do well in the lower river in the tidal zone, right down into brackish water.. I could be wrong, because I do know that SMB can live in brackish water, but I do think LMB do better in brackish tidal areas than SMB.. In any case, any stocked LMB will simply find their zone and do fine... bob

I’m sorry but I have to! Catfish are a Apex predator! They live reproduce and survive in almost every body of water. They eat everything! Smaller fish don’t stand a chance when a hungry Cat is present!!!! I’ve seen these catfish Devore all kinds of cut bait first hand. I have pics! Stock em’, catch em’ love em’!!! They rip drag and make rods bend! For real!!!

Raritan river largemouth from May 2018 on back to back casts. Roughly 5 and 4+ lbs... they do fine in the raritan.
