I don't understand what it is with NJ residents throwing tires, shopping carts, engine blocks, and piles of every other kind of garbage into the streams in that state, big and small??.. i don't get it... bob

The plastics are everywhere and because they are so light in weight and can float, they become a real nuisance. The shopping carts and tires are deliberate contributions to the pollution. The plastics and styrofoam and cigarette filters are from secondary and sometimes unintentional pollution. Even so, there's too much, The Green Brook flows along Route 22 and near many shopping and commercial areas which just keep adding a steady stream of pollutants into the waterway through storm drains and wind-blown deposits. And where does all of this "stuff" eventually wind up? Yep! The Raritan.

The next time your driving to work or to go shopping or wherever, look at the sides of the highway. Look at the stretch of Route 22 where it goes past Weequaihic Park Lake or anywhere along the divider out to 287 or any of the off ramps on any highway. The litter, and especially the "silt" is unforgivable! The highway crews treat the roads with salt and sand and never come back to clean it up. How many inmates are in our prisons getting "three hots and a cot"? Give them a job cleaning the roads. Now, there's a resource we should be using!

Does Gov. Murphy read this board?

NY state has plenty to be ashamed of, just read the news.. However, the roads and streams are kept clean.. I see county inmates cleaning the roads here all the time.. gets them out of the cell, probably helps get good behavior points, maybe a few bucks, not sure... etc..

we don't have the population NJ does up here, but still the 12 mile stretch of the Susquehanna river from Binghamaton/Vestal/Endicott/Johnson City through Owego is always trash free, and probably has 150,000 people.. Most of that population IS urban, not rural... The people simply don't throw garbage into the rivers and streams, nor all over the roads.. what is thrown gets cleaned up.. This is a "depressed economic zone".. People don't have incomes like people in NJ, and much more limited opportunities. Its not a poverty thing . Dumping garbage is simply not what people here do, but seems to be in NJ.. It was that way when I lived there for 37 years, and seems to still be so today. bob
