Introduction/Ramapo River Fishing
Hey everyone! My name's Justin. I've been keeping an eye on this site in order to learn new tactics and hear about everyone's reports for a while now, and I finally decided to join so I can start sharing my adventures with you all as well! I'm a senior in high school, and therefore one of the alleged few young anglers to be found around nowadays . I love fishing so much that I'm going to be attending college to major in Fisheries Science. Anyways, enough about me.
I went out yesterday on the Ramapo for some trout. Pulled up to the 287 hole to find it pretty packed with only a few guys having a single trout on their stringer. Most of them were drifting bait in hopes of hooking into the freshly stocked and pressured fish. Instead of trying to squeeze in between people, I decided to head downstream to find some less pressured holes. This was probably the best decision I could have made. Fished for 3.5 hours with a Size 5 Countdown in Rainbow trout pattern and managed to land around 7 trout and maybe 4 dink smallmouths. Overall a great day on the water for me, but not so much for those who didn't want to leave their spot. Got some Go-Pro footage of the day (Until the camera died halfway through the day, should've charged the battery ). Here's the link to the video. Enjoy! http://youtu.be/vAC8J1eJ-as |

Re: Introduction/Ramapo River Fishing
Welcome.
You must be from my neck of the woods because I mostly fish in Bergen county. Nice to see someone else from here! I feel a lot of the posters are further south in central and south jersey because a lot of reports are usually from the Raritan, and not a whole lot from the smaller rivers up here like the Ramapo. Also cool to see that they definitely stocked the Ramapo again this spring. I was there too early this year around April and got repeated skunks seeing nothing but suckers. finally got my first 2015 fish there though - perch. I'll have to return soon to catch some trout - been concentrating on Saddle River too much lately. How big were those first couple of fish in your video? |

Re: Introduction/Ramapo River Fishing
Nice job and welcome . Maybe I'll see you out and about some day. Even though I bought a boat a few years ago I still seem to walk the bank beat most days. Just something about stream and river fishing that I can't let go.

Re: Introduction/Ramapo River Fishing
Thanks everyone!
Mudcat, you definitely need to head back to the Ramapo! It's given me a ton of luck, unlike the Saddle River. I've never actually managed to get a trout out of that river. Maybe I should give it another shot one day this week. The first two fish in my video were probably around the 14-15" mark. Not giants like I was saying, but definitely bigger than the average cookie cutter! And thanks Lard! Your videos were actually my main inspiration for deciding to lug my Go-Pro around on my head. Re: Introduction/Ramapo River Fishing
Saddle river comes alive with trout when you use powerbait. It's also extremely pressured. I've caught them there on a lot of different stuff including spinners, flies, and worms. powerbait cannot be beat though, on that river (if you aren't using a fly rod).
I'll probably check the Ramapo tomorrow morning. going to stop at a few different bridges and spots to try my luck. 14-15" are always cool! Keep doing these reports, always fun to see what others have been catching in familiar territory. |
