Default Second Trout Outing

Returned to the same stretch of the river I fished a few days ago when I busted my NJ trout cherry. My son was already there and had caught/released 3 rainbows fishing the same two pools and a riffle we fished last night. Although I did catch 2 rainbows, I still have a ways to go to get the knack of it as evident by the 12 bites I missed.

Perhaps it’s because I’m using too small a hook-#10 baitholder ? When I lived in Georgia and did more trout fishing (since I was far from the salt) I’m 99% sure I was using a size 6.

I’m also going to start mixing in an in-line spinner. While i was there my son caught two using one.

small hooks work well with trout. You see the fly anglers use microscopic hooks.

However your bait could be getting in the way of the hook point. such as covering the hook point.

I thought the same, so after missing my first two bites last night, I made sure the point of the hook was exposed but it didn’t seem to make a difference.

Striking too soon ! UL action / power rods softer tips don’t wave off bites . If stiffer taper fish may go elsewhere .
Also you can leave book exposed , simple push bait up ahead of hook . I used to leave knot clippings longer they would in turn hold bait above hook ! Hook size is fine .

Make sure your hook points are sharp. It may seem like a dumb thing, but even hooks straight out of the package can be dull. Always carry a whetstone or small hook-hone with your tackle.

agree, ive been doing this whenever i feel a hook is not sharp enough. Some right out of the box too.

I sharpen every time I tie on a new fly, jig, lure, etc. Tie it on, pinch down the barb, sharpen, then fish. Same sequence every time.

Hooks don't come sharp enough out of the box. When you run the point lightly along your fingernail it should dig in not slide along.
