Default Recommendations on a good place to take kids fishing?

I have my favorite spots I like to take my kayak, but I'm looking for a good place to take my kids (age 10-12) where they can fish from the shore. Preferably in the middle third of the state (the elusive Central Jersey) and a spot where they are likely to catch a bunch of sunfish and maybe even some trout.

Rivers and streams can be tough with kids, more than one child it turns into a zoo. Look for ponds or canals for the kids.

Spooky Brook Pond in Franklin has a decent population of sunfish and crappie, and it is also trout stocked. There are decent sized bass and catfish in there also. Good shoreline access and not too many snags, but it does get weeded over in summer. The D&R canal is near there as well.

Start with a trip to the Pequest Hatchery Open House. Let them see what the fish look like and participate in some of the activities. It is sure to get their attention and build their enthusiasm. Make it all fun and by all means, when you do find a place to fish, let the kids do the fishing.

Small local ponds are the best bet. I'm not sure where you live but many places have local fishing derbies for kids. The Opening Day event at Spring Lake is designed specifically for kids. It is an "event" with lots of kids and adults who think they're kids. There are plenty of trout left over after the opening if you don't want to deal with the crowds.

Park ponds everywhere hold panfish, some more than others. Don't get too technical in your approach to how the kids should fish. A worm and bobber combo is basic but still hypnotic enough to keep their attention for a long time. Get them to feel like they are a part of the game by getting out with a shovel or pitchfork and digging some of their own worms. Picking nightcrawlers in the lawn in the dark will really test their desire and patience before you go.

Give us your location and information about how far you want to travel to take the kids fishing. The members of this board are great and will share lots of ideas with you.

Welcome to the board. I see this is your first post, yes?

Here is a link to events at the Pequest Hatchery which may interest you and the kids. It may also be of interest to others who are looking for a place to take the family.

I've never fished there myself so I'm not sure whats in it exactly, but theres a pond with a fishing dock at Ann Van Middlesworth Park in Hillsborough. Could be a good place to take your kids. Theres a basketball court, playground and skatepark there as well.
