Tips have never been mandatory on any of the boats that I have worked on. That being said, tipping regardless of service only makes the bad/mediocre crews worse. Rewarding bad/poor service only encourages it. I have tipped low and told them why. I have also refused a tip from a crew abusing a;!hole. Well said and what tips were always intended to be. You pay for the trip and experience and if crews works hard to make it a good experience it's a good thing to show your appreciation. The ones who do it right will always be taken care of, the ones who don't shouldn't be compensated for mediocrity.
