I teach that topic in detail in my Boater Safety Courses. That rubberized 3 footer pre spliced is a total waste of your money.

A great book on boat rigging is called Seamanship Secrets by Jamieson. They recommend 1/3 of boat length for the chain in the anchor rode.

The chain keeps the Danforth anchor shank laying on the bottom to help dig in further the harder you pull on it.
