Default Sunday at Echo Lake

The wife and I hit Echo Lake for some late afternoon fishing. For the first hour we got nothing, but I was spending much of the time playing with my new Lowrance fish finder and didn't cast much. The wife was casting a weighted T rig plastic worm and got nothing. I was tossing a crankbait and also came up empty.

We went to the far end of the lake hoping to drift the shore back to the launch with the wind, but of course once we reached far end the wind stopped, then switched direction. So much for that plan.

I tied on a Ned rig and got a folllow with my first cast then hooked a decent smallie but lost it. I had two more follows and then hooked a smallie about a pound. The wife was getting nothing so I figured I'd give her a Ned rig to toss. Within a few minutes she boated her first smallie ever. It was maybe a pound but she was pretty proud.

10 minutes later I hear her say "I'm caught on the bottom again". I saw the line moving through the water and said I think you have a fish. It took a while, but she finally boated a nice smallie close to 2 lbs. It made some good runs and jumped a few times, which was pretty exciting for her. She has caugt a few LM before , but never hooked a fish that fights like a smallie.

Unfortunately despite all of that action in a short time, we looked at the watch and it was time to leave. But I think I'm sold on the Ned rig for smallies from now on.
