I've been catching big carp in Oradell reservoir on home made corn meal balls using treble hooks for years. Only problem, the snapping turtles also like that bait. Some of them are 35lbs+. They do fight fight hard and never give up. Catch them from the shoreline. They all go back to fight another day.
As a kid, my Dad took me to Kensico reservoir for a day of carp fishing using a PENN 200 surfmaster reel spooled with dacron line.(still have that reel and is serving me well on the party boats).Eastern European favorite back in the days.
