Default Raritan River Smallies 8/20/16

I pried my ass out of bed early this morning to see if I could score some more smallies on the Big R. Lots of fish splashing early, but I only landed two small ones on topwater. After that I switched over to a tube jig and the bite was much more consistent. All told I landed seven smallies between 6-12 inches. I missed twice as many due to lazy strikes and bad hooksets, particularly when the fish would pick up the tube and swim straight at me at top speed.

Water was clear, and up a little from the summer low. Plenty of bait in the shallows, and some big carp cruising. Saw blue and green herons, egrets, and kingfishers. Not a tire in sight! (Thanks, Andy)
