Just thought of this...when I respool I use moderate tension, then take rod to an open field and fly a kite with it. That puts a nice bend in the rod and packs the line quite tightly. You could do that with backing, then splice in your top-shot and fly again to pack it. I have an 8' shark kite for 80 &50# & regular kite for 30#.
