The mono is really to prevent slippage of the braid around the spool.

I just use enough mono to cover the spool...maybe a bit more.

I have tried without mono...and had an issue with slippage...and that was on a spinning reel. Seems like conventional reel would be even worse considering the direct "shear" type force on the spool.
