Default Canyon Runner Tuna & Makos - The Canyon Season Begins

With a nice weather window to go offshore it was time for the Canyon Runner Team to shake off some cobwebs from being inshore for almost two months and head in search of some early season tuna. And so they headed off for a short day troll on Friday morning and arrived at the Lindy shortly after 7am. Capt. Deane Lambros had Kevin Muller Carl Geiger, and JL Bones-John - JBones - Lavelle with him.

Finding only 61-63 degree water - what we expected from the SAT shots - we knew it was bluefin or bust. And it didn't take long to start picking away at very nice size bluefin - 40 inches to 46 inches. Basically 35 to 50 pounds.
As the pictures show - Canyon Runner white 9" squid spreader bars accounted for the most fish. With a couple on ballyhoo. They had the green stick out (this is coming off the boat this week and we will not be using it for charters) and it accounted for only 1 bluefin bite which we pulled off.

We also trolled a 110 pound mako on a plug. There were actually a lot of makos out there as we saw a couple more on top and a couple other boats caught some a night. A great sign for the upcoming shark tournaments and a great sign for our upcoming overnighters.

In total we boated our 3 bluefin and release another 3 and lost a few as well. Had about 15 false albacore as well. Not bad for a day troll, even better for a day troll on May 20.

The water was blueish/green at best. NOT yellowfin water - yet. But that water should be here this week. As such, it's game on from here. We already had to cancel a couple trips this weekend due to weather but looks like we'll go Tuesday and keep going everyday until October with 5 trips through Memorial Day Weekend between the two boats. The point being - hopefully we'll have a ton of reports and pictures to share on a daily basis here on out until Thanksgiving!
