This time of year you should try the fall caddis (aka the October caddis) and streamers. You probably wouldn't go wrong with a woolly bugger either.
Sorry, but if you want productive trout fishing you would ideally drive out of Essex County to northwestern NJ. In northeastern NJ, you can try the Pequannock River in Passaic County, the Ramapo River in Bergen County and the Rockaway River in Morris County.
