Re: GAMBLER --Great Canyon Trip Tues
After multiple cancellations due to winds, I finally got out on the 30 hour tuna trip Tuesday thru Wed. on a non-sponsor partyboat. After a nice nap on the way out, we arrived on the grounds around 1pm, we were informed to be ready as we were moving into the slick of the Gambler boat that was leaving to go back into port. Sure enough, on my first drop, I hooked into a long fin, although not large, it was a nice 30# fish. Soon we were having a steady pick, that died off for a while in the late afternoon, but even during a slack, we would see a couple of tuna each hour. Once darkness set in the bite slowly picked up. At times we had 3 fish on at a time. I lasted until around 7am when I realized was falling asleep standing at the rail!! The morning bite never really materialized, a few fish were landed. Somewhere in the night I did manage to put a NICE yellowfin on ice, mates said about 75lbs, but it was a fat beauty for sure! A few guys got the skunk, not many, some limited out. The boat and anglers made sure that EVERYONE went home with some Tuna. I would have/should have landed 4 for sure but equipment failure cost me two fish. On one fish, brand new 80# mono just snapped! Not sure if another fish hit the line or what. On another fish, the drag seized up on me. Boat came home with 77 or 78 tuna. Lots of longfin during the day, yellow tail at night. VERY few fish lost due to tangles, a very good group of guys. Oh, forgot to mention, several Mahi caught as well, the squid were hard to catch but some did very well with the squid they did manage to get. We saw lots of whale action on Tuesday afternoon, and the porpoises stayed with us most of the time. We also got to watch a large mola mola (sunfish) Calm seas, warm weather, yellowfin in Nov.!! Who could as for more!!
