TLD is an aluminum spool I believe... If you put wire on it it's going to corrode the spool. Salt water and 2 dissimilar metals is what causes corrosion. I think the Senator is chrome which isn't the best either but it's a much less expensive reel.... Most are using the Penn 113h or 114h since they have stainless spools that won't corrode with the wire and they are a good size for Striper fishing as well.

As far as the wire line, Monel is a better choice then stainless since its softer and will coil better on the reel.

Further, lots of guys who used to troll with wire have switched over to braided line and use a drail weight to get the lure down further in the water column. If you use braid you don't need to worry about a rod with special guides or stainless reel spool like you do with wire.
