Yes, there is usually a school Bluefin bite inshore and years ago a pretty consistent Giant Bluefin bite occurred.... Have not heard much about the giants over the past several years but I don't think it's because they were not there, rather its a very specialized fishery and people who do it keep to themselves.
As far as the school bluefin, it seems the most productive areas in the past year or 2 have been just short of the canyon which is stretch for a small boat with limited fuel capacity.
What most people in the smaller boat category do is troll for the Bluefin in and around the mudhole and if all else fails you'll get some Mahi trolling around the pots.
