I've caught the same pike multiple time that has a gill dead and white hanging out of its gill slot. Net the fish, leave it in the net and de hook it quick or cut it whatever and then just leave it in the net for a bit. Let it suck some water through its gills don't just hoist it right up after the fight for a picture and measure.
