Yes I can see where the bowfin and snakeheads could be mixed up. Shape is almost the same but pattern and color is completely different. Isn't hard to tell the difference if people would actually learn the differences but they don't. Same thing with the flatheads, can't tell you how many spawning male channels or bullhead pictures I've seen labeled as flatheads. Other them being catfish they are very easy to tell differences.
You definitely never know what you will find in our waters.
