I use a humminbird 998 with side+down imaging at the console and a 958 at the bow in the big boat. I also use them in my little boat but I also run a 596HD in the bow on that boat. I use the 596 for icefishing too u just buy a bag+battery and an ice transducer. They are expensive units around a 1000 for the 958 and 1700ish for the 998. Whats ur budget and what do u want to do with it? For most applications a combo unit w 2D sonar and GPS is a good start, get the biggest screen u can afford. If you look around u can get a 958 standard model w just 2D sonar and GPS for around 900, its an excellent unit, the 2D sonar is second to none and the chartplotting is really good. The new finders have HD screens, I would not even think about buying a unit without it, i cant see the older ones well in sunlight, the HD u can see clear as day in direct sunlight, huge difference
