Re: Tackles and rigs to bring for fluke party boat?
50# braid and 50# flouro leader is what i have. Can i use this or would it be too heavy?
50 pound braid is overkill for Fluke but it should be fine. I would however downsize to a 20 or 30 pound leader. Run a slip sinker through the braid, tie a barrel swivel to the end of the braid, tie your leader off to the other end of the barrel and then your hook at the end.
I have bucktails ranging from 1oz~4oz and teasers. And sinkers 2oz~8oz.
What should i bring?
Bring them all.... When you are fluking or bucktailing from a boat it's all about having just enough weight to be in constant contact with the bottom.
The amout of weight depends on where and when you're fishing and how fast the current or drift is... I've used as much as 10 ounces to try and hold bottom on a fast drift in deep water or as little as 2 or 3 for a slow drift... In normal conditions anywhere from 3 - 6 ounces sinkers is usually enough... If you need heavier weights the boat will likley have them.
The size bucktails you have are fine in most normal conditions but again, if the current is screaming and you are fishing deep, bucktialing is tough since anything over 4 ounces is a challenge to bucktail with. You can try and cast up current and work the jig back to the boat to negate the fast drift but your are going to be casting and reeling a lot.
Also have some octo hooks and siwashes etc hooks in all sizes so any size i should bring pretied to my leader?
No need to pre tie.
I usually catch flukes on the jetties with a dropper loop with a teaser and a bucktail on bottom with a gulp. Is this how its fished on the boat too?
Yes, and some people use bucktails on the bottom and the dropper too instead of a teaser.... If the current is running fast the weight of the 2nd bucktail could actually help you stay on the bottom.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Thank you
Hope this helps, best of luck and be sure and let us know how you did.
