7"mh rod capable of holding 12ozs as ya never know when that current will rip. I use a shimano torium 14 wi 40lb braid. what matters most is you are comforable with the outfit. only time i'd go spinnig is if tossing light weight jigs & bucktails from an achored boat works geat to catch big cardboard while anchored
