As Lou said, it eliminates friction, elimnates weakness and prevents line break. But..... you can use too thin of a line and have it slip nto the the side of the frame/roller and cause a bigger issue.
We use guides with a fast ring, meaning uts a certain material and it eliminates the friction and heat pretty dam well. The roller tip theory is solid, but with the stuff available today, you can get the same results from a rod made with the right components too.
We have guides that look like a regular guide, but we hand customers a knife and telk them to cut the ring if they can..... we will build them a free rod f they can damage the ring... lol.
Roler tip really wont hurt you unless your using light braid or jigging. Depending on the rod, they can weigh the tip section down too. What type of rod are you thinking about putting it on?
