Gulf of Maine Cod
Dave,
Glad I was able to help on this and I do feel strongly that writing letters, going to meetings and speaking with a plan instead of going off on a tangent can make a difference. We made our point and were fortunate that the allocation we received will allow our customers to enjoy some very good fishing once again. It was not so nice for the commercial side, that is for sure and that the Conservation Law Foundation was very disapointed and wanted a complete shut down of the fishery.
What was recommended by the Science Center and approved by the Recreational Advisory Panel only has to be approved by the NMFS administrator. There is no need for a vote and no reason should not be appoved. I also believe because we have fished well under our 2012 allocation there is a request to open the cod season even earlier by up to a month somewhere around March 16th or April 1st. There is a CHANCE that this could be approved because they increased the commercial daily landings in the common pool because they were under thier 2012 allocation. I hope this explains what happened for those interested.
We will start running our trips in late March for haddock and pollock and start those cod trips for both shared and private trips April 16th. Can't wait after all this snow and I appologize for being gone so long on this site. My real job took me away for a while dealing with Hurricane Sandy issues. Now that it is blowing 40 here and expecting 10-12" snow today in the Green Harbor area, the RELENTLESS CREW can't wait to get back on the water working with Dave again fishing for cod and haddock.
Respectfully,
Dave
