My opinion is probably in the minority on this topic but with that said, I wouldn't hesitate to use it at all.
Actually, the JM 500g is mostly overkill. My go-to rod in NJ is a JM 300g and I haven't encountered a fish so far on that rod that I couldn't easily whip in short order.
