Re: 2nd Raritan River dam torn down (article)
The Nevius Street dam may not be so easy to get rid of.
This text is from the Star Ledger.
The removal of the Calco Dam last summer was the first phase of this three-step process.
But there is some concern that the Nevius Street dam in Raritan could prove an obstacle that El Paso is unable to hurdle.
Unlike the other two dams, the Nevius is privately owned, by Duke Farms in Hillsborough.
Water from an intake pipe at the dam is pumped 1.5 miles upstream and 81 feet above ground to supply a complex of ponds and streams on the 2,740-acre property. Tim Taylor, executive director, has called the water system “among the three finest lagoon landscapes in the country.”
Taylor has said that Duke Farms won’t sign off on the Nevius Street dam’s removal until the DEP guarantees that the ponds won’t dry up.
