A rod with more glass will absolutely aid in how far you can throw a lure/lead.
I've been using an Abu Revo Toro Winch mated to a composite rod and that little powerhouse of a reel lets my rigs/jigs FLY! The bend of the rod accounts for more of it IMO though.
