Ramapo Report 5/12
 

Decided to do some troutin today as tomorrow is looking like a washout. Morning started off bad when I realized I had left my interior lights on in my car overnight and the car wouldn't start..ugh. Its a little before 6 and I have no jumper cables and no one I know is awake. Wife says Walmart is open 24 hrs, so I take her car, pick up the cables, jump the car and get to the river around 745. River was still up a bit and clear. First spot Mahwah, once again disappointed, totally crushed em in this spot last year, this year having to work way to hard, wound up with 5 cookie cutters on a spinner in HOURS. 2nd spot a little north of there to a spot I haven't fished before but I know they stock there? NADA, 2 hours and not a bump. Real deep spot that was difficult to fish, get a drift etc. Its now 1ish and I had time to make the trek down to my Oakland spot that bailed me out a few weeks ago. Picked away here with about 5 more, 1 on a spinner, rest on worms. All cookie cutters today. Getting ready to wrap it up and get a take on a worm, big fish, loosen the drag, fish makes a couple runs and I'm shaking thinkin its big breeder, nope, giant sucker! what a let down.

Been out twice this year and fishing has been way tougher than last year. Thought with all the rain this season there would be a good spread of fish but I'm not seeing it, Ramapo doesn't appear to be getting the #'s the state says, at least not in the spots I'm fishing, there should be allot more fish around? Surplus trout? not in the Ramapo?

Nice report, I love fishing that river. Everything lives in it! Every year seems to be different with trout spots. With things warming up I'm sure you'll find more trout soon. I've caught them into June or even July before they stop appearing.

I've been up on the ramapo maybe 4 times this year and had a rough go each time. Could be weather, could be pressure , could just be me and you. I ve done very well on other rivers same day. Still 4 or 5 beats the skunk

Was the polish guy in the Oakland spot?

You caught 10 trout and a giant sucker and you're complaining? I'd take that any day.
