How not set a hook...

First thing I noticed was the guy not wearing a PFD. He's lucky he was able to grab the boat.

How he manages that is beyond me. I think it was a mix of being stunned by the surprise of a fish hitting + being knocked in the face with his rod.

A captain goes down with his.. bait caster

I think he appeared to drop his rod for a sec, then grab after it and fell in. Yeah, I can see myself doing that. Bottom line is that a comfortable situation can change in an instant over the most minor thing. Add cold water or a bang on the head and it can be deadly. Nobody goes on the water expecting to die. Wear that PFD.

I grew up with my dad drilling into my head "never stand up in a boat". Granted he was talking canoes and 10 ft jon boats, but that is still in the back of my mind 50 years later. I rarely stand up in boats LT 17 ft.

Good advice.

No one realizes the unfortunate death tolls on some bodies of water... Like round valley, could all be avoided with water safety!

A PFD gives you time. In cold water you will pass out long before it will kill you. If you pass out without a PFD, you are done. With it on, you still have a chance because you can float a fairly long time unconscious but alive and there is still a possibility of rescue.

I admit that in the summer, I rarely wear a PFD in my boat. In cold water I always have it on. Alone in my canoe, I always wear it regardless of the season.
