Kayak Registration?

Tomorrow I'm going to be picking up a Hobie Outback to give the kayak fishing craze a try! After checking the weather, I was looking to splash it in a small lake on Sunday to get a feel for it, but then noticed that all boats 12' or greater need to be registered with NJMVC. The Outback is 12'1", so that kicks me into that category, but do I really need to register a non-motorized boat???

Re: Kayak Registration?

There is an exemption for kayaks and canoes. As a practical matter how does anyone with a ticket pad know it's 12' 1"?

Kayaks and larger canoes are exceptions to the 12 foot DMV registration rule. Unless you put a motor on it.

Thanks all, just trying not to get a ticket for something stupid! Tight lines

From NJ DMC Site:

Boats and marine equipment that do not have to be registered:

- Those not based in New Jersey or operating for less than 180 consecutive days
- Foreign vessels
- U.S. public vessels
- Ship's lifeboats
- Non-motorized vessels used exclusively on small lakes and ponds on private property
- Racing vessels with New Jersey State Marine Police permit
- Non-motorized inflatable devices, surfboards, racing shells, dinghies, canoes and kayaks
- Non-motorized vessels less than 12 feet in length

congrats, welcome to the dark side. nj registration only applies if you add a motor, as previously mentioned. if you splash it in union county you still need to register if you are using any county parks, which pretty much covers ever pond, lake, river and puddle worth paddling. its $20 for the life of the boat and I think im the only sucker who has actually ever done it.

welcome to the darkside, I have a hobie revo that I only use in the salt, use smaller SIKs for the freshwater around here.

Wow a new way to make money. The Driver License "B" Endorsement is exactly that too. Worthless everywhere else.

Note that this registration requirement is for the Union County Parks department, not Comm of Motor Vehicles.

It's a users fee for their not so clean lakes.

Thanks for the info! Gonna be mostly in saltwater, and hoping to get it slimed up for the first time tomorrow in RB. I'm sure I'll see ya out there one day whether I know it or not! :D
