Motor question

Question would anyone buy a boat that has twin evinrude ficht 150's. I always hear that those motors have issues but others also say it's not all of them. Depends who worked on them. With that if I had them checked out and they are good is it worth buying or will I always have to worry about them thanks.

Re: Motor question

Not sure if the 150's were as high maintenance as the 200's we had on the sea tow boats.

Some crappy designs in that. They had a water cooled computer that ran things. One "feature" was that the cooling line was exceptionally narrow and clogged very easily. The computer would over heat and go to a "runback" mode not allowing over 2500rpms.

We found even the slightest bit of dirt would clog it. Had to back flush it to remove the clog. A poor design.

Like I said, that was 200 HPs. We had four of them.

Re: Motor question

These are defiinatly engines you want to steer clear of. Evinrude along with all the others right around 2000 rushed to meet the new emission standards and put out some real crap out there. Yamaha with their HPI, Mercury with their Optimax and Evinrude with their Fichts were the worst of the bunch and were blowing powerheads left and right.

If you see a boat with one these engines on it they are usually selling at bargain basement prices with good reason.

im with Gerry on this one.

If the boat has twin ficht motors, you should give them minimal value. They have literally zero resale and when blows up i dont think you would find an honest mechanic anywhere who will advise you to repair it. Personally, if i bought a boat with Ficht motors, i would buy the boat recognizing that you'll need an immediate repower. if you sell them while running you may find someone with a blown ficht that would just bolt yours on and pray

Thanks guys for the info. Hey Gerry I seen a boat with twin 200jp Yamaha hpdi motors and when I looked up info on them I read that they were one of the best 2 strokes ever made and then others also commented how good they are.

We had a big single HPDI Yamaha 200hp on one of our 25' Privateer tow boats. The damn thing would not die doing one of the worse types of work for marine engines

Cool thanks guys for the info. Hopefully I can buy the boat now because I think it will be a great deal. Of course after I get a servey done.

Re: Motor question

Keep in mind the Evinrude E-Tech Gen 1 motors have water cooled EMM's as well. Does not take much to clog the small hoses. The Yamaha HPDI 150 was probably there best motor with the 200 right along side it. If you do buy a boat with either motor, we like to put the motor in gear while warming up, as it will now run on all 6 cylinders. In Neutral, it only runs on three.
