Closing Day Walleyes - 11/26/16

With the marina closing down for the season and the state pulling the drain plug this week I made my last voyage on the puddle. With the forecast for saturday and the recent posts got me thinking walleyes might cooperate.

On the water for 11am and was greeted by a blustery NNW wind with an air temp of 42. Good thing I brought my ice fishing gear!! Water temps in the main lake were 43 degrees.

First hour I spent hugging the western shoreline fishing the drop-off with no takers.

Moved to a wind blown point and made a dozen drifts with the drop shot rig. On the second drift I landed a 15" walleye at 18' along the weed edge. Some dark clouds moved in and the wind kicked up so I moved to the leeward side of the point and had a steady pick of yellow perch to 12" at 25 fow.

With about an hour of daylight remaining I bundled up and headed to a spot on the windward side of the lake where I had success last weekend. Got to the spot and had to deal with white caps and a very fast drift (was wishing for a TM with spot lock). Tied on a 1/2 oz gold blade bait and on the first cast caught a camera shy 15" smallie. Made a bunch of drifts and got drilled by a 16" and 17" walleye at 18' - 22'. The fish hit very aggressively.

Only saw 2 other boats the entire day. No dinosaurs but I'll take it as a win.

Nice catching Squatch! Beautiful Walleyes! It's a shame Lee's and the marinas gotta close shop during peak Walleye season! :D
