Mahi Reel Partyboat
 

Which reel for Mahi on partyboats? Don't want a baitrunner or too big.

Looking to put it on a Bogan 7' spinning rod. 2 or 3 times a year.

Looking at Quatum Boca 40......???? Or Finn Nor Lethal 40.....

Any suggestions in that price range..... have to order soon. Want to go Sunday.

5000 sized reel spooled with 30-40 lb braid should suffice. Good swivels, good fluoro @ 30 lb and good sharp hooks (owners) to go along with it. Pre tie a bunch. Large coil in individual zip locks. If the bite is fast and furious you won't have to dick around tying leaders. Focus on fishing.

I'm using a Shimano Stradic CI4+ 4000 spooled with 50lb braid and a 20' 40lb mono leader.

If you are looking for a very good quality light weight reel this is a good choice. It's a bit on the pricey side but if it's in your budget, go for it.

I used my brothers the other day and was impressed. Pared with a nice light weight composite rod, you can also use it to bucktail all day with no wrist fatigue.

Thanks guys.... I was impressed by the weight of that Quantum Smoke, no weight listed for the Fin-nor.

It was a christmas present from my lovely wife...I was a bit shocked when I saw the price on them, but it's a beautiful reel. Prior to getting this reel, I used a baitrunner 8000d for mahi pot-hopping. It was serious overkill.

Nope, but for the right price, her brother might be willing to wear a dress. (of course, he's 6'8" and weighs in at about 280, might not be your type)

If you don't want to break the bank, I highly recommend you take a look at the new Daiwa BG reels. For around 100 bucks you get some very good qualities found in the higher end reels. I'd say get the BG4000 is all you need filled with good 30 or 40lb braid with a short top shot. Bring different size floro leader as sometimes they are line shy.
