Nomahegan, Echo and Lenape Trifecta Monday 8-29
I had Monday off but didn't feel like going far so in the morning I hit up Echo lake and had some luck on a swim jig. Then mid-afternoon, even though it was sweltering, I found a nice shady spot off the beaten track at Lenape and settled in with a cooler of ice old beers. I wasnt really expecting to catch anything on account of the heat, more just looking to relax in the woods and have a beer or two, but to my suprise i landed one decent fish and two dinks. So then last night I decided to take my dog to the pond closest to my house - Nomahegan - to see if I couldn't go three for three. I wasn't expecting much since I have had very, very little luck at Nomahegan (skunked probably 20 out of the 25 times I have fished it this year). Anyway I managed to catch not only a bass (not huge but a good fight) but I also landed a nice channel cat on a shallow running crank of all things. Pics aren't the greatest of the channel since my phone didn't have enough juice to use the flash so I had to improvise with my headlamp. All in all a good day of fishing within a 3 mile radius of home! Link to pics below.

Pretty cool man. I have had Channel Cats hit some weird things over the years, including flatfish, jigging raps, 2" and 4" swimshads.

Cold beers, shade, county parks, county cops and fish! Perfect together, LOL! Some nice fish from our local waters! Those cats will eat anything and are super aggrieved at times! Good catching dude!:D

I don't think guys realize how big of a predator channel cats are. Sure they scavenge when they can but how many dead fish are really on the bottom of the river? Not that many! they are hunting cray fish, insect larvae, and minnows a lot of the times so it's not uncommon to catch them on lures. I've caught multiple channels on poppers and even dry flies while fly fishing.

Channel Catfish, actually all catfish, are amazing creatures. The more I fish for them and read about them, the more impressed I am. Catfish can 'hear' a lure or potential prey items in two ways. They can use their lateral line and they can use their inner ears connected to their swim bladders. Here is a excerpt from the In-Fisherman: Quote:
